Difficulty swallowing

Difficulty swallowing liquids and food can be a very uncomfortable and distressing symptom. There are many possible causes for swallowing problems which include:

Difficulty swallowing

  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux (acid reflux) causing inflammation and strictures (narrowing)
  • Inflammatory conditions (eg. Eosinophilic oesophagitis)
  • Neurological conditions
  • Oesophageal cancer

The best first investigation is a gastroscopy test and X-ray tests are also commonly performed. Treatment options are directed towards the underlying cause.
