Malnutrition

What is Malnutrition?

Malnutrition or poor nutrition can lead to the body becoming starved of essential vitamins and proteins. This can lead to weight loss and decreased muscle mass. It may occur as part of a separate chronic illness or maybe due to gastrointestinal disease, such as coeliac disease, gastrointestinal malabsorption or inflammatory bowel disease.

Investigations include:

  • Blood tests
  • Endoscopic procedures (e.g. Gastroscopy with duodenal biopsy)
  • Video capsule endoscopy to examine the small bowel

Treatment is closely co-ordinated with dieticians and directed towards the underlying cause with diet and nutrition plans being the main focus of improving the malnutrition state. Food and supplements may be required to improve symptoms and the person’s condition.

If you want more information or are worried about nutrition, you can book a consultation with Dr Goel to discuss investigation and treatment options best suited to you.
