Orofacial granulomatosis

What is Orofacial Granulomatosis?

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a rare condition which involves inflammation of the lips and oral cavity. It is though to linked with inflammatory bowel disease, specifically Crohn’s disease, although it can exist as a separate orofacial condition by itself.

Causes of Orofacial Granulomatosis

The cause of OFG and IBD remains unknown but is likely to be a complex interaction between environmental factors triggering an abnormal inflammatory immune response in people with a genetic risk.

Treatment options include dietary modification (cinnamon- & benzoate- free diet) and medical therapy such as immunosuppressant drugs. Rarely, surgery is required.
